Wayne Cherry, Retired GM Design Chief,is 2008 Glenmoor Gathering Grand MarshalWayne Cherry, retired design chief at General Motors, will serve as the 2008 Glenmoor Gathering Grand Marshal.
From 1999 to 2003 his GM design team created the largest number of concept vehicles in the shortest time in automotive history.
Twenty six of his 42 years with General Motors were spent in England and Germany, where he was ultimately responsible for all GM vehicles in Europe. His design and product leadership made Opel the European sales leader.
He returned to the U. S. in 1991 and was elected vice president of General Motors Design in 1992. He was personally responsible for the new design direction of the Cadillac marque and for helping to re-establish GM as a design leader with several concept cars, from the Evoq to the Cadillac Sixteen.
During his time as head of GM design he streamlined the design organization and process, championed a major math-based initiative, created a network of advanced studios, assembled a talented and diverse leadership team and restored strong visual brand character to GM’s North American brands.
His leadership was instrumental in the acquisition of the Hummer brand and in the development of the H2. The SSR was his vision for a contemporary truck based on Chevrolet brand equity.
He has served as a judge at automobile concours throughout the United States.
A graduate of The Art Center College in Los Angeles, he now resides in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
